HOW WAS HEALTH WARRIOR BORN
Health Warrior sprouted from two bestselling non-fiction books: Born to Run by Christopher McDougall and The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan. We learned about chia seeds, their nutrition and Indiana jones-esque history in Born to Run. After scarfing them down for a few months personally, we realized they could help answer some of the troubling questions posed in the Omnivore’s Dilemma. The great majority of food consumed today is packaged. The great majority of packaged food is nutritionally weak derivatives of corn, soy, and sugar. So we decided to make a snack with a superfood as the first ingredient.
WHAT IS CHIA AND WHY IS IT A BIG DEAL
It’s the highest plant based form of Omega 3 essential fatty acids, protein and fiber. Wow! It was a main staple of the ancient Aztecs and one of the main foods in the western hemisphere for millennia. The Spanish conquistadors wiped out the crops. As a result, the world forgot about one of its most nutritious foods for over 500 years. Now it’s making a comeback!

HOW DO YOU SEE CHIA INFLUENCING CYCLING AND ENDURANCE ATHLETICS NUTRITION
It’s fascinating that there are so many stories from history of chia being associated with feats of endurance. Aztec Warriors carrying nothing but chia while crossing the continent. Hopi Indians eating chia while running from modern day New Mexico to the Pacific. The history is one of endurance exercise. We think the ALA omega 3’s allow muscles to burn good, clean energy for the long hauls in life. We believe chia should be a consistent staple of any endurance athletes diet throughout training and on race day!
HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE CHIA INTO YOUR DAILY DIET
I personally like it for breakfast. With a good hit of Omega 3’s (brain and energy), protein (satiation) and fiber (cleanse!) it’s just the right way to start the day. The bars are perfect at 3 or 4 pm. When you need something before you hit crossfit or go for a run, but a sugary energy bar would just lead you to crash.
IN YOUR OPINION HOW CAN CHIA BE USED TO ENHANCE PERFORMANCE IN TRAINING AND RACES
More and more athletes are powering performance with real food, not sugar or fake stuff. We think there is going to be more and more information on healthy Omega 3’s for athletes in the very near future as well. With any training, we encourage you to experiment! But make sure you experiment on training day, not race day.
